Since 2016, I have been considering the Western origins of the paper doll as an artistic tradition of conventional heteronormative, gender binary instruction. For Arprim’s A l'épreuve, I have created hundreds of hand painted paper dolls and arranged them on a screen-printed mat board which acts as a lined template for my pictogram “poems”. These sculptural cut-outs alternately evoke the traditions of Victorian silhouettes, emoji chains and hieroglyphic instruction. All three “poems” mine my childhood as a form of nostalgia or queer self-mythology – exposing gender-normative power dynamics, probing the vulnerability of the human figure, and examining modes of desire. Part of my working method, involves introducing narrative and political elements to the domestic paper figurine – transforming it into a leafy ode to the decorative, the transfeminine, the beautiful, the miniaturized and the minor.
